By English 11 students at Penn Manor High School –
There are more than 1,500 students in Penn Manor High School and more than 120 educators. We see each other around the building every day but do we really “see” each other? We’ve had classes with these students, we’ve been taught by these educators. But do we know them, do you know them? We started this project because we wanted to know more about these “strangers.”
We are students in a career prep English 11 class who created a project called “100 Average Joes.” It was definitely outside our comfort zone but our teacher encouraged us to go out and interview and photograph students and staff members who we had not met and or talked to before. During the project we found that we could meet and find out a little bit about different people in Penn Manor High School.
We enjoyed this rare project because we got to move around and meet new people. Although the skills to interview were difficult to learn, after about three interviews we started to look forward to the work.
There is a lot of writing and editing involved but it didn’t feel like work, it felt like learning something important. As career prep students we don’t usually get to do this kind of project. Getting to go out and interview people was a new experience, it was nice getting to write about the students that don’t normally get interviewed. You get to hear over 100 different thoughts and feelings plus the voices of the people in our English 11 class.
Here is our project:

27. Tristan Feltenberger is a sophomore who likes to hang out with his friends. He says he gets in trouble a lot. He expressed that he has never met his father but does have a step-father. Tristin says his favorite cartoon is Squidbillies.
26. Joey Sweitzer, sophmore at Penn Manor High School, believes "school was better back in the day." In elementary school Joey learned the basics of math, writing, English, etc. Now in high school he feels that the high level of courses is unnecessary because he's not sure how he's going to use it in life.
1. 1. Streeter Stuart is young at heart and married with two kids. Great at baseball but follows football, loves the University of Virginia, and splits wood for fun so he can light his wood stove.
Authors in order of appearance in the above video: Mily Hill, Angel Torres, Addison Myer, Shane Best, Robbie Conover, Deion Valentin, Devon Reis, Josh Bennett, Trent Sheaffer, Paige Zayas, Cari Concini, Marc Delacruz, Luis Marcelino, John Worthington, Adrienne Eager and Jacqueline Killian.

well i like the fact that everyone picked on random people as i heard from a source. Also i like the fact that one of them was me.
What a great feature! I’m impressed by the diversity of the people you interviewed. It really puts into perspective how large the Penn Manor community is. Great job!
I like the concept of this story
Great article, captions, photos and heart-touching words from fellow aspiring Penn Manor students. What else can I not be satisfied with the hard-work of the writers and the photographers.
I really enjoyed reading through everyone’s life changing events. Thank you for putting this together it was great..
Interesting idea. Some recurring ideas in this post struck me. First, a death in the family or the divorce of one’s parents really do shake our very foundations, and as a former teacher who is now reflecting on my career, I wish I had been more sensitive to those students who were going through that. I could have done better.
Second, it was understandable, but still sad, that so many expressed that school was boring and they couldn’t wait to get out. Teachers know how to make learning fun, but their hands are tied in SO MANY ways as to what they have to do. I do hope that you will someday reflect back on these days as happier than you find them to be right now.
And third… wait.. someone was wrestling with his brother and his brother caught on fire?? How does THAT happen? You must have been hot THAT day! 🙂
Good idea for a blog post. Nice job.
Great job! You guys worked hard on this project and it shows. I am very impressed!
I agree with other posters-such a great idea for a project! I work in a small district where we may know each other’s faces and names, but this makes me wonder how well we really do know each other.
As Jim mentioned, life events and losses change us forever. You don’t often know all that someone else is facing, so this is a good reminder to use compassion before criticism.
Thanks for sharing this work with us!
This was a very inspiring idea, and I feel that every student in the school deserves a chance to be heard. I didnt know half the people in this article but now I see that Penn Manor is a very diverse and individualistic district. I am pleased to see that I was in this article as well as many other unique students!
GREAT JOB!
I really enjoyed reading all 100 stories and looking at the pictures. I did not know every person, but I recognized almost everyone. Although the captions were brief, they captured the spirit of the featured individuals. What a great project!!
Great idea and great job by the students. It’s interesting reading about “real life” situations.
Mr. McKnight and Mr. Milot may want to invest in pocket protectors–they’re running quite a risk with those pens in their front pockets with no kind of barrier between their shirts and the ink. On a serious note, cool project Mrs. B and English 11. It’s nice to see the panorama of folks that spend close to a third of every day here.
Visual storytelling is perhaps the most profound mode of human expression. Thanks for unlocking the power of these small but mighty personal tales. You should be proud of your accomplishment. Bravo PennPoints staff!
Thank you for publishing the story and excellent photographs. One of the challenges of a large high school is getting to know fellow students as well as teachers who you do not encounter in classes. Great job!
What a great project. Being on the school board has many points of pride and Penn Points is certainly one of them.
How about that Mrs. Baldridge! She is a super teacher who finds ways to connect with kids and to make sure each student feels valued.
Have a great summer kids. The start of school next year is only 82 away.
What a great project to wrap up the school year. The amount of effort put into this project just shows that all students have the potential to succeed. Everyone has his/her own story, so thank you for finding a wide variety of students to share their stories.
What a great way for students to apply the communication skills they’ve learned in a meaningful activity to end the school year! The photos are well composed and thoughtful. The captions focus on significant reflections from the brief interviews. Your students should feel very proud of their efforts. Well done!
As one of the freshman stated, “life is an interesting journey” and this is an interesting project and one that fosters the journey. Nice idea!!!
This very creative and well-done project is a wonderful means of connecting the PM high school community!
I appreciate the honesty with which so many interviewees responded concerning significant events in their lives & advice for incoming students.
I hope that more similarly meaningful projects are forthcoming. Thank you.
What an outstanding project! We are truly blessed to have such talented & creative Teachers & Students at Penn Manor! Keep up the great work!
Semper Fi,

Great idea! Thanks for finding students, teachers, custodians, secretaries, and others to share a story. Makes the crowds of PM seem much more personable. We need to do this more!!
I’m from Lancaster county and I just want to say that this was a great idea and it was done really well! I enjoyed the diversity of people and answers. Good job 🙂
